TERTIARY SECTOR

INTRODUCTION
In these two lessons, we are going to learn about the tertiary sector, which is related to a wide range of transportation, communications, mind commerce routes, types of tourism and the financial-social services.

- TRANSPORTATION

Related with transportation in Europe is the Channel Tunnel, a 50.5-kilometre undersea rail tunnel linking United Kingdom with France beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover. At its lowest point it is 75 m. At 37.9 km, the Channel Tunnel has the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world.
The tunnel carries high-speed Eurostar passenger trains, Eurotunnel Shuttle roll-on/roll-off vehicle transport—the largest in the world—and international rail.
The Channel Tunnel began construction in 1988 and opened in 1994.

In Europe Galileo is a global navigation satellite system being built by the European Union European Space Agency (ESA) and other countries. It is a €3.4 billion project and an alternative to the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS). On 30 November 2007 the 27 EU transportation ministers involved reached an agreement that it should be operational by 2013, but later press releases suggest it was delayed to 2014. Watch more about the Galileo satellite (video) and answer the following questions:

  3. Name non European countries participating on it.
COMMERCE
In regards on commerce, the Fair Trade is an organized social movement and market-based approach that aims to help producers in developing countries obtain better trading conditions and promote sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a higher price to producers as well as social and environmental standards. It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries, most notably handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, cotton, wine, fresh fruit, chocolate and flowers.
